Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway is home to some of the best hiking trails on the Gulf Coast. They range from accessible boardwalks to sand trails, taking you through maritime forests and beach dunes. Outdoor adventures and our moderate winter temperatures go well together. Keep reading for a few suggestions to help plan your hiking adventure.
The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is home to four trails that range in ratings from easy to strenuous, with the longest being two miles one way. On the Pine Beach Trail (moderate to strenuous), you pass through maritime forest, scrubs and dunes as you make your way to the Gulf of Mexico and a sugar-white sand beach.
The extensive system within Graham Creek Nature Preserve in Foley features miles of marked and unmarked rustic trails. A raised boardwalk and ADA-compliant trail near the Interpretive Center provides a view of the headwaters of Graham Creek and the memorial tree grove.
Gulf State Park and the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail combine for 28 miles of paved trails and boardwalks. You might even see an alligator along the Gopher Tortoise trail on the edge of Lake Shelby.
