Coastal Alabama is known for its sugar-white sand beaches, family vacations, laid-back atmosphere and scrumptious seafood. The area is also rich in history. Museums all along Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway celebrate the rich history of those, past and present, who call the coast home.
While you are here enjoying family beach time Memorial Day Weekend, carve out some time to explore the historical locations made famous during the Civil War. Meander on your own or follow our Connecting with the Past itinerary.
Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan have been standing sentry at the mouth of Mobile Bay since the early 1800s. The kids (and kids at heart!) will love exploring the forts from top to bottom. Both forts are open to the public and feature museums as well as scheduled re-enactments and living history demonstrations.
To continue your adventure, follow the itinerary to the mouth of Fish River. Stretch your legs along the boardwalk and visit the environmental education center. Next up is Starke’s Landing, followed by May Day Park in Daphne and then the final stop at the Eastern Shore Overlook in Spanish Fort.
The Battle of Mobile Bay Civil War Trail extends beyond Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway to historic Blakeley State Park, the Museum of Mobile and Magee Farm in Kushla.
Create special memories as you step into the past during your next visit to the byway.
