People aren’t the only visitors that flock to Alabama’s coast in the spring. Neo-tropical migrant birds – often exhausted and hungry after their long flight across the Gulf of Mexico – find food and shelter along our shores. Spring migration is from mid-March through early May.
Along Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway, the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island is well known for its variety of feathered visitors. As a matter of fact, of the 445 species of birds documented in Alabama, 95% of them have been spotted on Dauphin Island. With 137 acres of maritime forest, dunes and swamps, the sanctuary provides a safe habitat for our winged friends.
For our two-legged visitors, five trails make it easy to bask in the natural splendor of this coastal area, including a handicapped-accessible boardwalk. Consult the trail guide and bird sighting checklist to help plan your day.
You don’t have to be a birdwatcher to enjoy the sanctuary. As you follow the trails through the sanctuary, you’ll encounter a lake, a swamp, and Dauphin Island’s beautiful beach on the Gulf of Mexico. The three miles of trails are an excellent way to explore Dauphin Island and enjoy the local nature
