Plan your summer byway tour around the Commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 3, 2019, at Fort Morgan Historic Site. This annual event provides one of the most exciting and educational opportunities to connect with the past along Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway.
About the Battle of Mobile Bay
The Battle of Mobile Bay, fought August 5-23, 1864, marked a significant Union victory during the Civil War. It was during this naval battle when the phrase, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” was made famous by Union Admiral David G. Farragut. The final siege of the battle resulted in the surrender of Fort Morgan, a heavily armed fortress that protected Confederate warships passing through the bay throughout the war.
What to expect
The commemoration event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort Morgan, 110 Hwy. 180, Gulf Shores, Alabama. Step back in time as you explore the site, which was used from the War of 1812 (while home to Fort Bowyer) through World War II. Living history staff and volunteers will perform drills and demonstrations inside the fort throughout the day. Make sure you stop and take in the beauty and stories of Mobile Bay, where so many naval battles were fought throughout our nation’s history.
The fort is a dog-friendly site, so feel free to bring your leashed pet (and be sure to clean up any messes).
