Cooler temperatures create an ideal time to hike along Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway. And everywhere you turn, you’ll be treated to the natural beauty that will convince you to return again and again, season after season.
One of the byways’ many popular trails is part of Gulf State Park. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail features seven different routes, more than 15 miles to explore, and six distinct ecosystems.
Take a hike along these trails to see a different side of the Alabama coast. Swap beaches and white sand for freshwater marshes and coastal hardwood swamps. Choose Catman Road, Rosemary Dunes, Twin Bridges, Gulf Oak Ridge, Cotton Bayou, Rattlesnake Ridge, or Coyote Crossing to discover its unique qualities.
Stroll along Catman Road, where native legend describes a “cat-like man.” You might see or hear the legendary Catman in the distance!
Looking for an alligator? Check out Rosemary Dunes. The resident alligator “Lefty” can often sunbathe along the marshes’ banks. Keep an eye out for other reptiles and wildlife that have made the trails their home.
When you visit the hand-built wooden bridges along the Twin Bridges Trail, you’ll step into the heart of the native land and enjoy the beauty of a rare ecosystem. You may even spot a fox scurrying around.
Hike up Gulf Oak Ridge and take a moment at the overlook to gaze upon the breathtaking view of the valley below. This ridge is one of the last remaining maritime forest communities.
Explore acres of sand covered with wet pine Flatwoods, scrub oaks, and palmettos on Rattle Snake Ridge Trail. Many reptiles and mammals can be found among indigenous wildflowers.
Travel Cotton Bayou, a short 1.1-mile trail laced with lush pine. This trail connects with many other parts of Gulf State Park and its trails. Cotton Bayou also serves as a route to the campsites of the park.
Coyote Crossing is the newest addition to Gulf State Park. The path is a 2.3-mile stretch that takes you to a paved path that leads to Fort Morgan. This trail allows you to travel from west Gulf Shores to Orange Beach without getting into a car.
After a nice hike, relax at the Butterfly Garden or stop for a picnic along Catman Road.
