If you are looking for a little spine-tingling adventure this season, look no further than Fort Morgan on Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway.

Construction of Fort Morgan began in 1819 and was completed in 1833. Over the years, the fort has been the home to thousands of soldiers and civilians. Many died in battle or from disease, and a few died from their own hands.

It’s easy to feel you are stepping back in time as you enter fort – into the former outpost where soldiers lived, worked and died for more than a century. The brick archways, dark passages and sounds of the interior can give you chills even on the warmest days. The ghosts of long-dead soldiers and other spirits are said to linger here. Ghost stories about the fort have been told for decades and visitors have reported their own encounters with the spirits.

One of the most haunted parts of the fort is said to be the old barracks. Records indicate a prisoner hanged himself there in 1917. It is said you can still hear the hanging man cry late at night. People visiting the fort have also reported hearing footsteps and being touched. Spooky!

The ghost of a young woman is the most witnessed manifestation. According to the story, she was attacked sometime during the 19th century and still roams the fort and grounds looking for her attacker.

Fort Morgan is open to visitors seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be sure to check the website for special hours and any closings.
