Who says learning about history can’t be fun? A getaway on Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway before school starts can give students a head start with a bit of coastal history.

Today’s modern Alabama Gulf Coast was shaped by the early settlers. Each community along the ACC is steeped in history. Native Americans enjoyed the abundance of natural resources along the waterways and in the maritime forests. European settlers found rich farmland with a mild climate to call home. Fishing was, and still is, a way of life in the bays and warm gulf waters. Museums along the ACC document those early days of the area with artifacts and stories from families who settled the area. You’ll find them on our interactive map at points 3, 7, 9, 12, 13 and 15.

Explore Civil War sites along the byway with our Connecting with the Past itinerary Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan played a major role protecting Mobile Bay during the Civil War. Both historic forts offer re-enactments and living history demonstrations for visitors to learn about the lifestyles and people of the past.

Everywhere you go can be a fun learning experience along the Scenic Byway.
