boating safetyBoating is a favorite pastime along the Alabama Coastal Connection, and you can launch your boat at dozens of locations that give you access to a variety of waterways.

No matter how much boating experience you have, it’s always a good idea to review safe-boating rules before you hit the water.

  • Always check the local weather conditions and forecast before launching. Storms can come up quickly on the coast, so boaters should be aware. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and changing winds, or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.
  • Use your checklist to be sure all safety equipment is on board and operational.
  • Use common sense. This means operating at a safe speed, especially when boating through crowded areas. Also stay alert. Be respectful of buoys and navigational aids. Yes, there are “rules of the road” even on the waterways. Follow them.
  • Have someone else on board who knows how to handle your boat, just in case you can’t.
  • Leave information at the marina or with a family member so someone knows where you are going and how long you expect to be on the water. Include your boat type and registration info.
  • Have some way to communicate, whether a cell phone, radio beacon or personal locator beacon.
  • Have life jackets on board. Make sure there are enough for everyone. In Alabama, anyone under eight years old must wear a life jacket. It’s also a good idea to know how to swim, but anyone who doesn’t know how should wear a life jacket.
  • Last, save the alcohol for after you return to shore. While a lot of people associate a good day on the water with a cooler full of beer, the probability of being involved in a boating accident doubles when alcohol is involved. Remember that the effects of alcohol are exacerbated by sun and wind.

Now you have a plan. Happy (and safe) boating!
