If tossing a mullet across the Alabama/Florida-state line isn’t on your bucket list, it should be. The Flora-Bama Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party will have the beach hoppin’ and the fish floppin’ April 25 to 28.
This year marks the 29th year the legendary beachside dive has invited the young and young-at-heart to test their aim and tossing abilities at the Mullet Toss, which benefits youth charities throughout the Alabama Gulf Coast and Florida Panhandle.
The fish will start flying at noon on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. If you’ve never flung a fish, we’ve compiled a few tips that may help you when it’s your turn to toss your mullet.
• An underhand throw won’t cut the mustard. For maximum distance, go with an overhand throw.
• A step-hop method is good for momentum. Hey, if it’s good enough for major leaguers on the baseball field, it should work on the mullet field, too.
• No gloves or sand on the fish allowed. That’s the fastest route to disqualification.
• If you can fold the fish in half, it’ll help keep a floppy fish from flying in the wrong direction, maybe.
Admission is $10 for ages 21 and older and $15 for those under 21. In addition to the Mullet Toss itself, there will also be live music held throughout the weekend-long event.
If tossing mullet isn’t for you, there are plenty of other activities in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. From charter fishing to shopping or just simply relaxing on the beach, come on down and enjoy what the Gulf Coast has to offer you.
