Do you hear that sound? Birds are calling out and singing as spring makes an appearance along southern Alabama. If you are a bird enthusiast, you will be happy to know that Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway makes for a birdwatcher’s paradise.
You can’t go wrong with any of the areas along the byway, but we are highlighting a few favorite spots to check out this spring when looking for the birds that make Alabama their home.
Dauphin Island
Did you know that Dauphin Island is one of the top spots in the world to catch sight of winged beauties? Among its 135 acres of unique ecoystems, 420 bird species have made this sanctuary their home. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary Trail System consists of 4.3 miles of diverse habitats that nurture a variety of fowl, such as blue-winged teals, woodpeckers and bald eagles.
The Eastern Shore, Mobile Bay Causeway and Blakeley Island Birding Loop
Covering the northern part of the eastern shore, this path provides 11 viewing stops, including Blakeley Island and Village Point Park. Each area along the loop offers different scenery and unique birds to spot. Take out the spotting scope to look for the belted kingfisher, northern cardinal and many more.
The Mobile-Tensaw River Delta Loop
To watch birds that reside by the water, the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta Loop is an excellent option. Best explored by boat, birders will be able to take in an abundance of songbirds. Keep an eye out for the common yellowthroat and Bachman’s sparrow.
