The first full week of May is National Wildflower Week and an ideal time to enjoy the benefits of those April showers. This week celebrates the blooming of various wildflowers across the country. One of the best places in Alabama to see the colorful beauties is along Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway.

Wildflowers grow all along the byway, especially in open fields from Grand Bay to Dauphin Island and from Orange Beach to Foley and farther north. On the edges of wetlands and swampy areas, look for the swamp rose mallow. This tall plant with a large, pink, five-petal flower is a favorite summer wildflower on the Alabama coast.
