When was the last time someone told you to “take a hike?” In Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, this isn’t an insult. It’s a fun activity. Hiking and biking is a great way to get to know a side of the beaches in Alabama that many visitors don’t know exists. When you’re looking for things to do in Gulf Shores, check out the trails for an afternoon of outdoor fun.
The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge in Gulf Shores is Alabama’s last undisturbed coastal habitat. The refuge offers a series of trails ranging from one to four miles. Each trail is unique and features different habitats, including dunes, swales, wetlands, maritime forests and scrub habitats. The trails are open seven days a week during daylight hours. Each trail is rated from easy to moderate to strenuous, and there is a wheelchair accessible trail, as well.
While the refuge trails offer a rustic experience, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores offers some paved pathways and is ideal for both hiking and biking. Bike rentals are available, and some companies will deliver bikes to the trails for you. The Backcountry Trail is made of six paths totaling 13.5 miles. Boulder Park, near the intersection of Catman Road, Twin Bridges, Rattlesnack Ridge and Rosemary Dunes, features a fun rock climbing area for the kids and kids at heart.
