Thirty years ago, the first mullet was officially tossed across the Alabama/Florida line at the at the Flora-Bama’s Interstate Mullet Toss. This year’s Mullet Toss will be April 25, 26 and 27. Visitors from far and near take their places inside a 10-foot circle and fling their mullet as far as their strength will let them. The fish-flinging fun is open to all ages. Throughout the weekend, there are live music and entertainment, as well. While the Mullet Toss celebrates 30 years, the Flora-Bama is celebrating 50 years as a roadside dive.
If music speaks to your soul, the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival will tell you its story.
For the last 30 years, hundreds of songwriters have made their way to the Gulf Coast to perform their Grammy-winning hits. Music lovers will be treated to a listening-room experience as songwriters tell stories about how some of the music scene’s biggest names came to sing their songs. The festival will be held at numerous venues Nov. 6 to 16.
Whether you love camping in the great outdoors, kayaking on Lake Shelby or skim boarding at the beach, all of these activities have one thing in common. You can do them all at the Gulf State Park, and 2014 marks the Alabama State Parks system’s 75th anniversary of service.
