There’s more to do in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach than soaking up the sun and splashing in the surf. Nature tourism opportunities are plentiful with bird watching, back bay kayaking and miles of hiking and biking trails.

More than 11 miles spread out among six trails, and six distinct ecosystems make up the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. The trail curves through Orange Beach and the Gulf State Park. Hikers will enjoy the butterfly garden, freshwater marshes and coastal hardwood swamps.

You’ll find a birdwatcher’s paradise at four locations on the trail that have been named viewing points by the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail: Gulf Oak Ridge, Twin Bridges, Catman Road and Rosemary Dunes. Don’t forget your camera! There are two viewing points that are great for snapping photos of alligators: Rosemary Dunes and Gulf Oak Ridge.

There are a few things you’ll want to be sure to bring on your hike through the trails. Pack a backpack with these items and enjoy the day discovering the flora, fauna and wildlife of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach.
