History buffs, we’re calling your name. It’s once again time for tours by twilight at Fort Morgan, just west of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The historic fortification, also known as the Guardian of Mobile Bay, hosts thousands of visitors each June and July for this fascinating step back in time.
Held every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, living history interpreters in Civil War period dress tell the story of the Fort’s Civil War service through historic vignettes that are based on actual events. This unique peek into the Gulf Coast’s war history only happens nine days out of the year. If you’re planning a trip to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach in June and July, be sure to add this fun activity to your must-do list.
Fort Morgan was active during four wars, the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II, but it’s most famous for its role in the Civil War’s Battle of Mobile Bay. Union Admiral David Farragut is credited with the historic battle quote, “Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead!”
Make a day of it and stop at the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, located minutes from the Fort, on your way to the twilight tour. The refuge is home to more than 370 species of birds and four nature trails, one of which is wheelchair accessible.
