Five Ways to Explore Alabama’s Coastal Connection

Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway represents miles of shoreline and highways on the Gulf Coast. Comprised of beautiful beaches, picturesque downtowns, wildlife preserves and historic sites, a journey on the scenic byway provides hours and days of entertainment and education. Oh, and you can’t forget all of the fresh seafood the region is known for, either!

There are five ways you can connect with Alabama’s Coastal Connection and the sights, sounds and even characters that make this region of the Southeast tick.

Connect with nature and enjoy two days of the Gulf Coast’s natural splendor with the help of interpretive facilities along the scenic byway. Our itinerary suggestion includes stops at the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and a variety of scenic views in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

Connect with land and sea with a drive along the westernmost point of the byway through the Grand Bay community, known for farming, pasture lands and seasonal crops. Continue with a trip to Bellingrath Gardens, Bayfront Park in Daphne, Orange Beach Indian & Sea Museum and the Baldwin County Heritage Museum.

Take a step back in time and connect with the past on a journey through the area’s military history. Spend your time touring community museums, churches and cemeteries. Explore locales including Fort Gaines Historic Site, Fort Morgan, and the Eastern Shore Overlook in Spanish Fort.

Connect with your taste buds and savor the flavors of the South with a culinary tour of the Alabama Gulf Coast. Sample fresh, Gulf seafood like steamed shrimp at Dauphin Island’s Barnacle Bill’s. Get your fill of beignets in Gulf Shores at Café Beignet and feast on a red snapper sandwich at LuLu’s. You can even scan a QR code to see exactly where your red snapper was caught.

Connect with each other. You won’t find a set itinerary for this. Sometimes, that’s the best way to explore! Geocache or get lost in your journey as you cruise the roads of the scenic byways. Take to water with charter fishing and get a first-hand glimpse at the recreational fishing industry on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
