Man’s best friend does have places to go along the Alabama Byways. Several attractions, accommodations and parks welcome you and your pet to our friendly shores. Sound good? Grab the leash, get some treats and gas up the car – your adventure awaits!
For a total pet-friendly vacation, travel the Connecting with the Past itinerary, all of which are dog-friendly. Your first stop on the itinerary is the Fort Gaines Historic Site on Dauphin Island. As with most places, Fort Gaines requires pets to be leashed and the owners to clean up behind their pets. The same rules also apply on the Mobile Bay Ferry, the waterway link between Dauphin Island and Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
Stop 2 on the Connecting with the Past itinerary takes you to Fort Morgan, also a pet-friendly place. Keep those pets leashed, but don’t curb your enthusiasm as you wander through barracks and battlements to see how soldiers from the past endured life and battle on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
Your next rendezvous with the past is at the mouth of Fish River, under the U.S. 98 bridge to the public launch area. Look for the interpretive signs that will give you the riveting history of this meandering body of water. A little farther up the road in Fairhope is a dog park that’s a great place for your beloved pet to run and roam. Watering stations, waste bags, benches and collection stations make this a convenient and necessary break before your next stop on the itinerary, Starke’s Landing and MayDay Park in Daphne on College Avenue, just off Scenic Highway 98. This site served as U.S. Army supply depot in 1865. You and your furry chum can enjoy a spectacular sunset as you end your day in history at the Eastern Shore Overlook. Signs there tell the story of Fort McDermott and the 8th Iowa Line, critical elements in the siege at Spanish Fort.
Ready for a break? There’s a dog park in Daphne that will offer some respite to you both before you head on to grab a bite or tuck in for the evening.
Several Alabama Gulf Coast restaurants save a place for Fido in designated spots. Check out the Dog-Friendly itinerary on Eat Your Way and enjoy your stay in the sun. You can also find dog-friendly restaurants anywhere along your journey by checking this website.
