You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy the annual Twilight Tours offered at Fort Morgan, a historic fortification also known as the Guardian of Mobile Bay. Each year, vacationers, war historians, homeschoolers and more converge on the Fort as living history interpreters dressed in Civil War-period attire tell the Fort’s storied past.
Twilight Tours are only available on Tuesdays beginning at 7 p.m. in June and July, weather permitting. If you’re planning a visit to the Alabama Gulf Coast, be sure to include a Fort Morgan visit on your beach vacation agenda.
While Fort Morgan was active during four wars (the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II), it is most famous for its role in the Civil War’s Battle of Mobile Bay when Union Admiral David Farragut made his historic battle cry, “Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead!”
When you’re not taking in the historic vignettes that are based on actual events, the vistas from the Fort offers scenic views. Arrive early and enjoy a picnic on the banks of Mobile Bay before you engulf yourself in the Alabama Gulf Coast’s military history.
