Leave Only Footprints initiativeHeaded to beaches along the Alabama Coastal Connection this summer? Great! We can’t wait to welcome you with open arms to our white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters.

When visiting Alabama’s beaches, keep in mind our Leave Only Footprints initiative. The goal is to keep the beaches pristine, stop plastic from winding up in the ocean and protect our wildlife friends like sea turtles and dolphins.

Items such as glass containers, metal shovels, litter, tents and structures larger than 12 by 12 feet are prohibited, in addition to overnight camping, fireworks, loud music, fires, pets and vehicles. Make a note to avoid bringing such items to the beach.

Umbrellas, chairs and other beach gear are perfectly acceptable to bring to the beach, but remember to pick up all your belongings no later than one hour after sunset. Nothing should be left on the beach overnight.

Keep Alabama's Beaches CleanOther ways to help preserve our beaches for generations to come? Avoid walking on any beach vegetation, as plant roots are working hard to hold together the fragile dunes. Explore far from bird nesting areas. Nests are often located on the ground and are camouflaged to resemble the surrounding environment, so watch where you walk. Pack out all your trash and recycle when possible and refill any holes. They can be dangerous to wildlife and people, and nothing ruins a vacation like a sprained ankle.

On your next beach trip, do your part to maintain Alabama’s beautiful beaches and make sure to Leave Only Footprints. For more information and tips for an environmentally friendly vacation, head to cleanisland.org.
