Whether it’s your first Coastal Christmas or your tenth, there is something special about celebrating the holidays in lower Alabama. While we won’t have nary a snowflake, we do have a rich culture that welcomes Christmas with open arms and smiling faces. After all, we’re the folks that pride ourselves on Cajun-fried turkeys, seafood dressing and fresh cranberries in our sauce. Families share treasured recipes and most everyone heads to the beach or to the country to see family and friends.

Chances are at some point, you’ll be taking Alabama’s Coastal Connection this holiday season. If so, you’re in luck because there’s plenty to see and do for everyone. Ready to take a ride?ACC belllingrath gardens

First stop is at Bellingrath Gardens for Magic Christmas in Lights. Just last year, Magic Christmas in Lights made it to USA Today’s list of “10 Best Public Light Displays in America.” After touring the thousands of twinkling lights, families and kids can have their picture taken with Santa. This event is open daily from 5pm to 9pm; Bellingrath is closed on Christmas Day but is open every other day from November 29th to January 2nd. Cost is $15 for adults, $7 for kids ages 5-12 and free for children under 4. It’s a walkthrough so if you have little ones, bring a stroller or a wagon. Bellingrath is easy to find—it’s off the Coastal Byway at 12401 Bellingrath Gardens Road in Theodore, AL 36582. Call 251-973-2217 for more information.

On the Foley side of the Scenic Byway? No problem! Celebrate a Coastal Christmas by attending Foley’s Christmas in the Park. It’s one night only, Friday, December 4th at Heritage Park. This family event includes cocoa-sipping, singing carols and the lighting of the Christmas tree. It’s a free event and the park is located at 104 N McKenzie Street, Foley, AL 36535.
