Something fishy is going on at the Flora-Bama. Gather up your group and head over for the Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party on April 24 to 26. The crowd will be hoppin’ and the fish will be floppin’!
The young and young-at-heart are welcomed to this annual event where fish-tossing abilities will be tested and prizes will be awarded in several age categories, beginning at 8 years old. Line up in Florida to toss your mullet (not the hairstyle) from a 10-foot circle across the state line into Alabama. The fish will start to fly at noon on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Besides flinging fish, you’ll be treated to a weekend of live music, beach food and fellowship with a few hundred of your closest friends. Parking is limited, so make plans to carpool, take a taxi or ride the Flora-Bama bus. The bus is $5 per person, each way, and pick up is available at Publix in Orange Beach.
Mullet Toss Tips
• An underhand throw won’t cut the mustard. For maximum distance, go with an overhand throw.
• A step-hop method is good for momentum. Hey, if it’s good enough for major leaguers on the baseball field, it should work on the mullet field, too.
• No gloves or sand on the fish allowed. That’s the fastest route to disqualification.
• If you can fold the fish in half, it’ll help keep a floppy fish from flying in the wrong direction, maybe.
Each year, the Mullet Toss helps raise more than $20,000 for local youth charities throughout Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Perdido Key, Florida. These charities include education and prevention programs like those by the Community Drug and Alcohol Council, Inc. A $15 entry fee is required to participate in the Mullet Toss.
