HP-120614-Beach-300x225Snuggled up on the couch, and dreaming of summer vacation at the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach? If so, why put off to tomorrow what you can do today? Taking a winter beach vacation offers a lot to visitors, including mild temperatures and fewer crowds. While there may be some activities or places of interest that won’t make a winter itinerary, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach still offer plenty of action for winter visitors. Here are three things you should know when it comes to planning your winter beach vacation.

Check for Seasonal Hours

We all have our standard favoriterestaurants that we can’t wait to visit every summer during vacation. During winter, though, some of those restaurants may close for the season, but many more remain open albeit with a winter hours schedule. For instance, the ever popular LuLu’s will be closed Jan. 12-14, while Ginny Lane Bar and Grill is closed until March 1. Therefore, turn winter into a great opportunity to discover some of the area’s hidden gems, such as Bahama Bob’s, a tiny beachfront restaurant, Nolan’s Restaurant & Lounge (great steak), and Fisher’s, which is actually two restaurants in one location. Head Upstairs for a night out with great food; stick with Dockside for picturesque views of Orange Beach Marina. You may find a new favorite to add to your must-visit list when you return in warmer weather.

Dip Your Toes
Although the Gulf may be too cold for swimming, many hotels and resorts have heated and/or indoor heated pools for year-round water fun. If you’re bringing the entire family, consider staying at Caribe Resort, which has great indoor pools with small children’s slides. You’ll find large indoor pools at many properties, including Phoenix West II and Turquoise Place. Staying at a property without indoor water fun? No problem. Head to one of the cities’ recreation centers, where you’ll find indoor heated pools.

Score a Deal
Winter beach vacations mean lower rates, resulting in huge fun. Because hotels are looking to fill rooms during the off season, you can find some real bargains when vacationing during winter. This means you can save on accommodations, and put those savings toward visiting local attractions or trying a new activity like deep-sea fishing.
