Fling ‘em high, fling ‘em low, fling ‘em fast, fling ‘em slow, but fling ‘em! There’s only one place to be if you’re flinging mullet for distance: The Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss, April 25, 26 and 27. Get a chance to toss mullet, win prizes and hear great music, all wrapped in one fun weekend.

A Mullet Toss consists of individuals on the beach throwing a mullet weighing approximately one pound from a 10-foot circle in Alabama across the state line into Florida. The rules are simple: stay in the circle, don’t go out of bounds and no gloves or sand on the mullet allowed. After your throw, retrieve your mullet and place it in the bucket to be tossed again. There are men’s and women’s divisions, as well as divisions for kids and those who are physically challenged. Trophies and prizes are awarded in each category. There are six finalists in the men’s and women’s divisions each day.

The fun begins Friday at noon and at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Celebrity tossers will be on hand this year to give it their best shot each day at noon. Cost to enter the event is $15 per person and does not include the cover charge for the Flora-Bama. Shuttles are available for $5 per person from Publix in Orange Beach and Winn-Dixie in Perdido Key. Parking is available at the Flora-Bama for a $10 charge. Proceeds from the event benefit local youth charities, including local school education and prevention programs from the Community Drug & Alcohol Council Inc.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the day. There will also be music and other activities during the Mullet Toss. And, in answer to the age-old question: Why toss a mullet? Why not?
Don’t worry, the tossed mullet don’t go to waste, they are fed to the multitudes of hungry birds around the Flora-Bama.
