If you feel like getting a little crazy (and chilly) on New Year’s Day, start 2013 with a refreshing dip in the Gulf of Mexico. Polar Bear Dips are held all over the country and many say they symbolize washing the previous year’s cares away and welcoming in the New Year.

Hundreds of adults, children and pets will celebrate the start of another year on the beaches of Gulf Shores for the 2nd Annual Slip & Slide Polar Bear Dip.

Held at Gulf Shores Public Beach, the local Kiwanians, along with The Hangout and the City of Gulf Shores, will host the event which features a two-lane, 33-foot slip and slide. Participants can choose this fast and furious method of splashing into the waves or can opt for the traditional route and get a running start into chilly Gulf water.

Following the Polar Bear Dip at noon, all participants will be treated to a free buffet at The Hangout. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and best teams. In addition, a special cash award and trophy will be presented to the Snowbird Club with the most participants.

The Flora-Bama will also hold its annual Polar Bear Dip on Jan. 1. At high noon, you’re invited to run into the Gulf of Mexico. Organizers say “let the past be the past, and wash it all away.” Following the dip, there will be live music. More than 1,000 people attended the 2012 event.
